Rushing to be with you

| October 10th, 2024

Confession:  I definitely exceed the speed limit at times.  This became a smidge problematic as my minivan was the lead car in a line of big trucks headed to Asheville to take disaster relief supplies.  Tommy Eustice said that his State Farm insurance was going to score him lower for going over the speed limit!!  My mind and body were anxious to get there quickly, to see the good folks at FBC Asheville, and to lay eyes on my parents, whom I knew were okay, but it was the anxiety of just making sure they were alive and well.

As I reflect on that time, I think about the ways that we often feel that desire to rush to be together here at First on Fifth – in the good times, in the hard times, and all in between.  As we do “Life Together” each and every week, we continue to grow closer to one another in ways we never anticipate.  We feel joy when someone shares a celebration with us.  We cry when others are crying.  We get excited when we see others excited.  When we plan programming or fellowship opportunities, I feel that sense of wanting to rush to be with you.  It almost seems counterintuitive that we would actually grow closer together as our membership grows.  And yet, that’s what’s happening.  We have that Jesus-like table that always has a spot for others to join us.  And as folks join us, our love only expands and grows and deepens.  What a gift!

This was evident this past weekend as we gathered for the Fall Fellowship.  I heard people ask “who is in charge of this?  What ministry team pulls all of this together?”  Here is the fun part – nobody and everybody is in charge!  This is perhaps the only event we do that is not housed under any ministry area or staff member.  It is a collection of everyone’s energy and somehow it magically happens!  From the food, the table set-up, and even when the amazing Sabbagh twins come running up to us the morning of the event to say “we would love to do face-painting!  We will take care of all the logistics!”  This is community.  This is life together.  And I’ll keep rushing to be with you – let’s just hope that doesn’t come with a speeding ticket one of these days!
