As I look back on my time serving as a pastoral intern at First on Fifth Baptist Church through the summer and fall semesters, my heart is filled with gratitude. What began as an opportunity to learn has become a sacred journey of growing in faith, community, and calling. What I discovered was far more than I expected: a community that welcomed me with warmth, grace, and open arms, and a season that has shaped my heart for ministry in lasting ways.
When I first started my internship, I came eager to know what pastoral ministry truly looked like beyond the classroom. Each Sunday in worship, I’ve experienced the beauty of God’s presence moving through our gathered voices, prayers, and quiet moments of reflection. Standing alongside our pastors at the communion table reminded me that ministry is always shared, a holy act of service that connects us to Christ and to one another.
Through moments of pastoral care, I’ve witnessed how simple presence and prayer can bring comfort in times of need. I’ve come to see how much ministry is rooted in simple presence, sitting with someone, listening to their story, or offering a prayer together.
One of the most joyful parts of this semester was planning the Serve Together mission event. Seeing our church family work side by side for the good of our neighbors embodied what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. Those moments reminded me that the gospel takes on life not just in our words, but in our service and compassion.
As I continue to discern my path in ministry, I carry with me the lessons, laughter, and love I’ve found here at First on Fifth. Thank you for welcoming me, encouraging me, and allowing me to learn among you. You have been both teachers and companions on this journey, and I thank God for each of you.
With gratitude and peace,
Claudia G. Amaya
