Invisible God,
We long to see.
To see you making all things new.
We long to see you holding everything together—even when it can seem like all things are falling apart, when it feels like we are barely hanging on.
We long to see you.
Help us to see where you are working—even when it seems so much in our world is intent on keeping your fullness invisible.
When those on thrones—who have been created “through you and for you”— have such disregard for those created in your image, when they have such disregard for truth…
Help us see a truer story.
When rulers have such disregard for decency.
When they delight in cruelty…
Help us see a more loving story.
When the powerful are more intent on making more prisoners
than setting prisoners free. When they “trample on the needy, and bring ruin to the poor of the land.”
Help us see a more liberating story.
When it is so hard to see. When it is so hard to hear. When it is so hard to hope. We need a new story. A story of a God who does not hide fully in mystery— but who becomes fully human. A God who lives. A God who loves. A God who eats, and drinks, and breathes. A God who suffers, who bleeds, who reconciles: that all who taste may see.
We pray this in the name of the image of the Invisible God, Jesus the Christ who teaches us to pray, saying:
Our Father,
Who art in heaven hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever
Amen.
