Creator God,
We come before you today, knowing that you always hear our prayers, with all that is on our minds and all that touches the deepest parts of our souls.
With the new school year on the horizon, no matter our age, we are all facing a new week. We celebrate so much happening in our lives and give you thanks. We are also aware of storms brewing all around us. Though the waters roar, we will not fear.
Some storms arrive suddenly. Others build slowly, almost unnoticed, until we realize we are exhausted from fighting against the wind. There are storms in our homes and families, storms in our communities, storms in our nation, and storms across our world.
Even in the midst of storms, we give thanks for the people who steady us when life feels uncertain. We give thanks for friends who call, family who listens, neighbors who show up, and communities that remind us we do not have to navigate difficult waters alone.
We give thanks for the ordinary gifts that sustain us: a meal shared around a table, laughter with friends, a quiet morning, a beautiful piece of music, a child’s joy, a pet who greets us at the door, and the simple gift of another day.
We pray especially for all who are in the middle of the storm, even this very day.
We pray for those who are anxious about what tomorrow will bring; for those facing financial uncertainty, difficult decisions, strained relationships, a new diagnosis or a prolonged illness, grief, or loneliness. When the waves seem higher than our strength can handle, remind us that we do not have to face them alone.
We pray for those who feel as though they are sinking beneath the weight of everything they are carrying. Give them people who will reach out a hand. Give them communities that will notice when someone is struggling. Give us the courage to be the kind of people who do not look away when another person is overwhelmed.
We pray for our country and for those entrusted with positions of leadership. In a time when fear and division can feel overwhelming, help us resist the temptation to turn our neighbors into enemies, knowing that we are stronger when we are willing to listen, to seek justice, and to care for one another.
And God, we pray for ourselves.
Like Peter, sometimes we are willing to step out of the boat, trusting that something greater than our fear is calling us forward. Teach us to notice your presence, not only in calm waters, but in the wind and waves. Teach us to reach for one another when someone begins to sink. God of the storm and God of the stillness, hold us close. May we be people who step out of the boat when love calls, who extend a hand when someone is sinking, and who trust that even in the storm, we are not alone.
We pray this in the name of Jesus, the one who taught us to pray saying…
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
Amen.
