Gracious and Loving God,

We come before you today as people who know both joy and sorrow, hope and grief. Just as Mary and Martha stood outside the tomb of Lazarus, we, too, know this place well—the place where loss meets faith, where questions rise in our hearts, and where we wonder where you are in the midst of our pain.

But we know that you hear our prayers at all times and know the longings of our souls on the deepest levels.  You are not a God who is far away, but rather the God who draws near.

So today we bring before you all the places in our lives where death and despair seem to linger. We lift to you those who grieve loved ones, those who sit beside hospital beds, those who feel the quiet ache of loneliness or the heavy burden of fear. We remember communities wounded by violence, nations divided by suspicion, and a world groaning under injustice and suffering.

God of compassion, when we stand like Martha—caught between faith and doubt—remind us that honest questions are welcome in your presence. When we feel like Mary—overwhelmed with sorrow—receive our tears as prayers too deep for words. And when we feel as though hope itself has been sealed behind a stone, help us hear again the voice of Christ calling life out of death.

And God, as Jesus told the crowd to roll away the stone, help us see that we are part of this work too. Give us courage to remove the stones of injustice, prejudice, and despair that keep your children bound. Make us a community that unwraps one another from whatever holds us captive—fear, shame, loneliness—so that all may walk freely in the life you desire for them.

And when we leave this place today, may we carry with us the assurance that the same voice that called Lazarus from the tomb still calls to us and to the whole world:

To Come out. To Live again. And to Step into the life You are creating and making all things new.

With gratitude for your presence in our grief and your promise of life beyond every tomb, we pray these things in the spirit of Jesus, who shows us the way of love and who taught us to pray saying….
