Last week I sat down with a couple friends from church to record a couple podcast episodes for First Baptist on Fifth’s new Life Together podcast. It was a wonderful time to share stories and to hear how God is at work in the lives of our people both within and beyond the church house walls. What was most surprising is how quickly these conversations became deep conversations. People wanted to talk about how God shows up in our life together. From sharing the joys and sorrows of life to navigating life’s many changes and transitions, these conversations were abundantly filled with spiritual riches. I look forward to hearing more of these stories in the months ahead.
This past Sunday our youth and some adults participated in the CROP Hunger Walk to raise awareness of hunger and to raise money to support global and local hunger ministries. Our goal was to raise $1,500 and we exceeded the goal with $1,642.80 raised as of October 23. In youth group leading up to the event we talked about Jesus’ approach to hunger—addressing real needs physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. To reinforce the need for food and social connection we shared a simple baked potato bar and salad meal prior to the event. Leftovers were taken to Samaritan Ministries. Thanks for your support for our youth’s focus on hunger relief.
This weekend we will be taking a great group of youth and adults to Fort Caswell in Oak Island, NC to participate in the CBFNC Youth Beach Retreat. The theme for the weekend is “Hold On.” Specifically, our youth will be learning about the ways God holds us and gives us hope that we can share with others. With temperatures forecasted in the 70s, there may be plenty of beach time too. We’ll return with many stories to share.
Lastly, I want to thank those who have donated time, money, or supplies to help with the response to Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. Through your generosity we have now made two trips to FBC Asheville and delivered 7 truck loads of food and personal items to support those in need. Our Missions Committee also approved funds to purchase shelving and storage for FBC Weaverville to help them establish a food pantry at their church to support those affected by the flooding.
