Hello all! This was going to be my glowing recap of The Longest Table that was to take place on World Communion Sunday. I was prepared to go on and on about how wonderful all of our table hosts were, how meaningful sharing a meal with our community was, and how much it meant for other downtown churches to be a part of the efforts this year. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and we had to cancel the event.
BUT, there is still so much to rave about in regard to The Longest Table! We had four sister downtown churches – Augsburg Lutheran, Calvary Moravian, Centenary, and First Presbyterian – join the efforts this year. We made good connections with representatives from each church and together were able to spread an even wider invitation throughout our community. This collaboration is invaluable and helped strengthen what were already meaningful relationships between our congregations.
When I put out the call for table hosts to represent First on Fifth, I had a tremendous response. I was able to fill our allotted 10 table host spots within a day. Your response and excitement were proof to me that this event is meaningful and worth your time. I am thankful for the ways all of our table hosts eagerly said yes and started making preparations to welcome our neighbors at their tables.
Although we weren’t able to actually make The Longest Table happen this year, it was still such a meaningful event and experience. In fact, the planning task force, made up of representatives from all the partnering congregations, met last night and is on board for 2027! So, look out for upcoming information about The Longest Table in October 2027. We hope it will be everything we’d planned for this year and better.
In hope,
Mary
